As to why they are comfortable with the "status quo", probably because nobody, including the incumbent, managed to offer "significant and positive changes" in the country's direction. We will have another five years of campaigns in the media to polishing images of government officers. We will see more billboards with flashy, but most of the times annoying, pictures of government officers in their respective portfolios, who knows they could get something in 2014.
We will have another rainbow cabinet consisted of political appointees from coalition parties (Demokrat, PKB, PKS, PAN, PPP) plus some small parties, and potentially plus Golkar. They will be solid enough in the first few months, but then start to fight and compete for 2014.
We will have more corruption suspects, including some of the outgoing legislators, and clearly more fugitives. Number of fugitives in the past five years surpassed number of corruption suspects with lot more State losses than those convicted or detained. Who cares?
The economy will grow higher than this year because markets wanted so, even if government will do nothing about it. Nobody would pay attention on who's growing, because they believe in "the trickle down effect". Nobody will talk about "widening social and economic gap" because they believe "people could accept what they have or nrimo in Javanese language".
Fuel prices could be slashed further because crude oil prices have declined to below US$65 per barrel. Foreign investments will come, with or without government efforts, because companies here have significantly higher profit margin than their peers in other countries. Hopefully they will create new jobs, pay higher salaries, so workers could pay school tuitions and motorcycle credit installments.
"But please tone down your expectations. You will get what you choose. So, live with it," a friend advised.
"In fact, the economy will grow even if all government officers fall asleep. As long as they do not disturb us, we could provide jobs and pay higher salaries," one businessman said.
Well, but why would a country needs government if its officers could fall asleep and let the market take cares everything?
The poor? "They could take care themselves. They could sleep peacefully out there."
Inequity? "You gotta wait. We need to get more from the State before the State redistribute to you guys."
Inequality? "Don't talk about that. It's a socialism idea. We're living in capitalism system here. We are even better than US in implementing that."
Justice? "What's your problem? Are you in trouble with the police? Take my advise. If you're going to steal something, make it a hit. Don't steal millions, but trillions, you'll get your way out."
Collusion & nepotism? "Well, as long as media doesn't report, I'll be fine. Don't be naive my friend. Our party needs money and we have to start to raise for 2014 because the campaign cost will increasingly bigger that time. State-owned companies are the best to get them, not directly from the SOEs, but from their suppliers, providers, and business partners. All we need to, just introducing potential partners to SOEs, they will take care the rest."
So? "Wanna change? Go to Mars or at least Antarctic."
